  • Make certain water leakage from pipes in areas like: bathroom, the shower recess, kitchen, downpipes, guttering, hot water service and air conditioning unit overflows are directed away from the home or connecting them to mains
  • Remove any loose timbers in ground contact A.S.A.P.  Loose timbers should be stored above ground level to allow airflow and assist during inspection for termite activity or workings
  • Homes built on a concrete slabs ensure the whole external slab edge is visible for any signs of termite mud tubes. Do NOT cover the slab edge with pavers, landscaping, concrete paths, etc, as termites will and can gain access into the wall cavity through exterior weep holes and any gaps in the mortar between the brick work.

Nests can be created in soil mounds, trees, or underground.

Subterranean nests are underground, in the soil, base of tree and stumps.

Subterranean termites gain most of their water from the soil.

Termite nests are kept at high humidity.

Subterranean termite species can become pests in buildings if a water leak is present. For example: leaking pipes, showers or roofs.

Termite nests are generally maintained at temperature’s between 25°C – 36°C.

Feeding

Termites gain their nutrition from any wood, wood products, leaves, bark and grass, and anything containing cellulose. Paper, cotton, and other plant produce are actively attacked and consumed by termites. If these things are breaking down because of fungal or other organisms, the termites will be more appealing to termites. Certain species of termites do not attack solid wood, but wood that is decomposing.

Worker termites consume the wood and distribute their nourishment with the young, the other workers, soldiers and reproductives, feed from their oral and anal areas.

Termites need protein and carbohydrate in their diet this is obtained by the fungi which the decay wood and vegetation produce.

Habitats

Most cases of subterranean termite attack it is the actions and negligence of a human giving termites perfect conditions for their formation and growth.

When a pair of Alates is searching of a site to commence a new colony, they are out in the open environment, if their basic needs for food, shelter and moisture are met, they will not survive. Thousands of Alates are released from the colony very few, and often none, will begin a new colony.

Reducing the termite hazard, wood in contact with soil, moisture, trees and stumps, sleepers used as retaining walls are major factors. Loose wood left in ground contact or used as fill underneath a decking area or bathroom during construction, provides food and ideal conditions for termites to begin a new colony.

Dead trees and tree stumps are perfect nesting areas not only for subterranean termites but also the dampwood termite species. Dead roots in ground contact may also be infested, which will give termites with easy access to buildings.

Subterranean termites rely highly on moisture to establish and uphold their colonies. Moisture is also needed by the wood decay fungi which termites obtain their protein.
